What is MUN?

Model United Nations, also known as MUN, is an educational model of the United Nations used for simulations in which students learn about contemporary issues in diplomacy and international relations. In MUN conferences each participant acts as a representative of a country, organization, or individual and must work with other delegates that represent other UN countries to solve a problem.

All MUN conferences have different committees that simulate different organs of the United Nations or other organisations such as UNDP, UNWOMEN and UNSC. In HUMUN conferences, committees range from 30 delegates to 100 delegates depending on the type of the committee. While General Assembly committees are much larger in delegate numbers, other special committees such as UNSC are usually limited to smaller delegate numbers due to their rules.

MUN teaches participants skills such as public speaking, researching, debating, writing, critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership as well as improving English speaking. While MUN is typically used as an extracurricular activity, some schools also offer it as a course. MUN aims to engage students and help them develop a deeper understanding of current world issues and global politics.

Model United Nations is widespread among many education institutions around the world and participants from different cultural backgrounds come together to learn and share each others perspectives.

Letter from secretary general

Distinguished Participants,

It is my utmost gratitude and honour to welcome you all to the 3rd annual session of Hacettepe University Model United Nations 2026 Conference.

Model United Nations conferences help the young generation to engage with international conflicts and debates through diplomacy, critical thinking and negotiation. We are living in a time period that is defined by rapid change and unexpected challenges. From the devastating effects of climate change to the intense dynamics of international security. At this point, it is highly important to brainstorm and participate as the youth in platforms where it is possible to raise our voices and awareness. Thus, HUMUN'26 will be the perfect place for you to do this.

As the Team of HUMUN'26, we are committed to organize a conference that goes beyond the traditional boundaries which redefines the Model UN experience. Out of 12 different committees which have different scopes, we believe that everyone can find something for themselves. We aim to offer a platform where everyone can find what they are interested in and solve the global issues revolving around those interests through fruitful debates with other participants.

This year, we have dedicated our opening day to a high-level COP31 Themed Panel followed by committee sessions that focus on contemporary issues. We believe that engaging with the complexities of climate action is not just an educational goal, but a necessity. By bridging contemporary UN agendas with the youth, we ensure that every participant's voice resonates within the global forum.

As the Secretary General of this conference, I hope that you will also find something to discuss in this conference and join us between April 30- May 3. I cannot wait to meet with all of you in Beytepe.

Sincerely,

Naciye Başak Tuncer.

Secretary General of HUMUN’26

Honourable participants,

It is my utmost pleasure to extend the warmest welcomes to all of you gathered for the third annual session of Hacettepe University Model United Nations Conference. My name is Ibrahim Murtuzov and I am a senior year International Relations student in Hacettepe University. This year, as the president of Hacettepe University Model United Nations (HUMUN) Society, I have the honour of serving as Director General of HUMUN’26 Conference which will be held on between April 30th - May 3rd

Hacettepe University Model United Nations Society is one of the most active MUN associations in Ankara. Its network extends across many universities and high schools all over Türkiye. After plenty of MUN trainings we have given to different schools, and countless awards won by our dear members in other conferences, the time has come to meet up in Hacettepe University for one unforgettable experience.

I firmly believe that MUN conferences are a great way for students to boost their confidence through improving their public speaking skills in English and to learn the basic foundations of diplomacy through engaging in different United Nations committees and other international organisations. These conferences have certainly helped me in my studies and have given me a broader perspective on contemporary issues. It might even be among one of the biggest reasons for my decision to study International Relations. Therefore, the objective of HUMUN’26 will be to show the true potential of MUN conferences to all the esteemed participants, and hopefully inspire more people in their future life decisions like it did with mine.

While I come to the end of my letter, I would like to stress that none of the aforementioned promises can become fulfilled without the tireless efforts of the great HUMUN’26 organisational team and of course my deputy director general Umay Fırtına. Together we will make this conference a reality. So without further ado, prepare for a fantastic four days in the vibrant Beytepe campus of Hacettepe University as our largest ever conference, HUMUN’26, welcomes you!

Sincerely,

Ibrahim Murtuzov
